Stories

Here we collect stories from across the whole of local democracy, hearing from councillors, community leaders, activists and local government officers about local democracy and why people should participate in it.

Cllr Ayas Fallon-Khan, Brighton & Hove City Council

Cllr Ayas Fallon-Khan shares how Brighton & Hove City Council have used Social Media to create a two-way conversation between council representatives and residents, make better use of staff resources and to help save costs.

He also highlights the healthy debate which can come from openly engaging with the public using Social Media but how this has allowed them to find out what residents actually want and ensure the council budget is allocated accordingly.

Through online conversations Brighton & Hove City Council have also been able to provide residents with a more informed description of the services the council provides. Most interestingly, Cllr Fallon-Khan points out that even if organisations aren’t actively using Social Media as part of their communications strategy, conversations about the organisation will still be taking place online and it’s therefore better to be part of that conversation.

Meet Derry’s Modern Mayor…..

As many of you know, Learning Pool’s main office is located in Derry, Northern Ireland. We were delighted recently with the appointment of Councillor Colum Eastwood as the city’s Mayor. Derry has always been known for being one of the oldest remaining walled cities in Europe and Mayor Eastwood is now helping the city to be known for having one of the youngest but most innovative mayors in the city’s history.

Learning Pool’s Modern Councillor service aims to bring to life the stories of elected members and here we chat to Mayor Eastwood about -

  • His transition from Councillor to Mayor at the ripe old age of 28
  • How the community of Derry have come together to support the City’s bid to win the title of UK City of Culture
  • His hopes for getting young people more involved in Civic Life
  • And what he thinks makes a Modern Councillor

Learning Pool would like to wish the City of Derry all the best with their bid for the City of Culture title 2013.

Wigan and Modern Councillor

Wigan Council has recently begun offering Modern Councillor to its Councillors. Read what Councillor Ged Bretherton thinks of the e-learning service from Learning Pool.

Where did you hear about Modern Councillor?

I first heard about Modern Councillor through an awareness session set up by MDO’s here at Wigan Council. At the session I received the web address, log in and other details about Learning Pool and the Modern Councillor service.

What course/s have you looked at?

I’ve looked at nine courses so far, six of which I have completed and three of which I’ve still to finish.

What do you think of the courses?

I have found the courses to be excellent and of a very high standard.

What I enjoy the most about the courses is their bite-sized nature. This allows me to complete small sections at a time which I find extremely user friendly and enables me to do a little training almost every day and at a time which suits me.

In your opinion does this form of training have any benefits over classroom training?

Yes, apart from being bite-sized I love the fact i can do training in my own time, when it suits me. I can sit at home and top up my skills without needing to go to the office and even train over the weekends.

Would you recommend Modern Councillor to another Councillor?

Yes, definitely. I have been a councillor for over two and a half years and still learned something new from the courses. I believe it is a great service which makes training much easier for councillors.

Peterborough and Modern Councillor

Peterborough City Council has recently begun offering Modern Councillor to its Councillors. Read what Peterborough Councillor Stephen Goldspink thinks of the e-learning service from Learning Pool.

Where did you hear about Modern Councillor?

I attended a democratic service meeting at my council and Learning Pool’s services were mentioned during the event. Afterwards, I logged onto the Modern Councillor website, and started one of the courses.

What course/s have you looked at?

I have taken the Risk Management course to date and plan to view the Data Security course shortly.

What do you think of the courses?

I found the course extremely useful, the information helped reinforce my existing knowledge answered any concerns I had on the topic.

Overall it gave me a better understanding of risk management and I believe completing the course was time well spent.

In your opinion does this form of training have any benefits over classroom training?

Definitely, the biggest and best part of this form of learning is its flexibility, you can do the training around your diary. I personally took this course at 5:30am and late at night after work.

Finding the time to sit down for classroom training is practically impossible. In my opinion this form of training will become mainstream in the not so distant future, I certainly hope so!

Would you recommend Modern Councillor to another Councillor?

Yes, full heartedly. The Risk Management course exceeded my expectations.

Ipswich and Modern Councillor

Ipswich Borough Council has recently begun offering Modern Councillor to its Councillors. Read what Ipswich councillor George Debman thinks of the e-learning service from Learning Pool.

Where did you hear about Modern Councillor?

I heard about Modern Councillor from a fellow councillor here at Ipswich who found the training to be an excellent way of getting around the time constraint problems of attending classroom based training and recommended it to me.

What courses have you looked at?

So far I have completed the Information Technology and Data Security courses.

What do you think of the courses?

I think the courses are excellent!

The courses gave a high level of interactivity which kept me interested and engaged in the topics when generally I would start to switch off at the same point training in a classroom.

In your opinion does this form of training have any benefits over classroom training?

Yes, I think this form of training is extremely beneficial. The courses help keep learners engaged and by being bite-sized they allow anyone to complete one section at a time.

When time is a factor, which it generally is as a councillor, completing the whole course in one sitting may not be possible. Having the training online allows me to continually review the information and use the courses as an information source to revert back to if I am unclear about a specific topic.

Would you recommend Modern Councillor to another Councillor?

Yes, I’m looking forward to having a look at the Overview and Scrutiny course the next time I have a few spare minutes.

Thurrock and Modern Councillor

Thurrock Borough Council has recently begun offering Modern Councillor to its Councillors. Read what Thurrock’s Councillor Danny Nicklen thinks of the e-learning service from Learning Pool.

Where did you hear about Modern Councillor?

I heard about Modern Councillor from an internal memo which was sent through our department. I contacted my Member Development Officer who forwarded my information on how to log on to Modern Councillor and start the courses.

What course/s have you looked at?

I have looked at two courses so far, Code of Conduct and Overview and Scrutiny.

What do you think of the courses?

I think the courses are a brilliant learning tool. The courses clearly outline my role and responsibilities as a councillor, which is great.

Each course covered areas which, before taking the course, I had not realised their importance to me in my role as a councillor.

In your opinion does this form of training have any benefits over classroom training?

Totally, it allows me to fit training around my schedule and do the training any where, at any time, especially at the moment as it is very difficult for me to free up enough time in my diary for classroom training.

Using Modern Councillor I can train anytime and from the comfort of my own home, which I really like.

Would you recommend Modern Councillor to another Councillor?

I certainly would! I plan to recommend it to other councillors from my council and anyone else who asks me about the service.

Chelmsford and Modern Councillor

Chelmsford Borough Council has recently begun offering Modern Councillor to its Councillors. Read what Member Development Officer Marie Russell thinks of the e-learning service from Learning Pool.

Where did you hear about Modern Councillor?

I heard about Modern Councillor at a Learning Pool event. I was enquiring about the service for our council when I found out that Building Capacity East had already purchased the service on our behalf!

What course/s have you looked at?

I have looked over all the courses available in the catalogue and look forward to the latest instalment.

What do you think of the courses?

I really enjoyed the courses. The information is interactive which made it much more exciting and interesting to view. This service gave me a better understanding of the duties of a councillor and each course helped improve my understanding of specific topics.

In your opinion does this form of training have any benefits over classroom training?

Yes, there are hundreds of benefits. The information is available at your finger tips which is great if you are unsure about a particular area.

I am not the biggest fan of reading and the courses were broken down into bite sized sections allowing me to do one section at a time, which is great.

I can leave the training and come back at a later time to do the next section, which is perfect for my lifestyle. I feel it would benefit any councillor in a similar position.

Would you recommend Modern Councillor to a Councillor?

Definitely yes. As a member development office I am actively trying to get more councillors involved.

I believe if more Councillors tried this type of learning they would make the switch to e-learning in an instant!
