What Others Say
We asked some of our customers, Member Development Officers and Councillors alike, what they thought about Modern Councillor and here's what they said.'It's not preachy. It lays out your responsibilities in a clear, precise way. It's not ground breaking or new but it's stuff that you could have missed because of the sheer volume of things you have to get through. I've been dipping in and have been through pretty much all of it now. The presentations are great fun and visually appealing – it's a lot easier to do something if it looks attractive and pulls you in. You can fly through it; it's almost like light reading.
I'd definitely recommend it. You can never be trained enough. There is always something more to know. I was so impressed I sent an e-mail to all my fellow members telling them what a great resource it is. Several then logged on and sent me replies of agreement. It's even encouraged me to take a fast track development course.'
Cllr James Hunt, South Gloucestershire Council'I've used the media module. While I'm experienced at dealing with the press, it was very interesting to go through a 45-minute unit of the key techniques. There were some very good messages in there. The reputation of local government needs to be raised and dealing with the media professionally is an important part of that.
Additional modules are being added to the site all the time. It's a good idea for member development officers to send out regular reminders so councillors can put the relevant dates in their diaries.
Modern Councillor isn't an alternative to other forms of training. Instead, it complements them and prompts people to ask for more. Members are short of time and going on a two-day or evening course might be out of the question – but dipping into Modern Councillor will tell you whether you need more training on top.'
Cllr Alan Dean, Uttlesford Council
'We're delighted we bought Modern Councillor for our local authorities and fire & rescue authorities. We recognise the challenges in supporting elected members and see Modern Councillor as part of the blended approach to member development. Using Modern Councillor we'll give members an exciting new way to flexibly access relevant resources.
Many councillors will use this service to keep up to date with the latest initiatives and help themselves to be effective in their role as community leaders. We've been impressed by the customer service, innovation and responsiveness provided by Learning Pool to authorities in the region and we're looking forward to working together.'
Jane Sullivan, East of England Regional Assembly'Modern Councillor has been a tremendous help on our Councillor Development programme. Although we ran a comprehensive induction programme, with day and evening options, there were still Councillors who were unable to attend. Having the Modern Councillor programmes enabled us to provide an alternative way of learning for those unable to attend particularly on essential information such as the Code of Conduct and Role of the Councillor.
We have definitely saved money by not having so many one to one briefings for Councillors who have missed out on vital information.'
Linda James HR Consultant (Councillor Development) South Gloucestershire Council'I believe that this new service from Learning Pool represents a truly significant development in the modernization of Local Government. Being an elected representative has always been a difficult job, with councillors needing to balance many important and varied priorities – using technology to help councillors develop key skills while continuing to serve their communities seems to me like a tremendous idea and I have no doubt that Modern Councillor will add real value for members across the country.'
Sir Chris Clarke, Former Leader – Somerset County Council'Modern Councillor from Learning Pool gives Councillor Development Officers like me a record of the learning that has taken place. Councillors are able to see their own learning plans - and the progress they have made. It's great for Councillors who find it hard to fit in traditional briefing sessions and the 'chalk and talk' style of learning. With Modern Councillor.com, they can learn any time they like from the comfort of their own home.'
Angie Aspinall, Kirklees Council'I was attending a Planning meeting and was not sure about when and if I could speak and whether I had a conflict of interest. Although I had attended a training session on the Code of Conduct I could not remember what was said. It is brilliant to be able to check up on this before the meeting and be able to dip in when I wanted.'
Cllr Trevor Jones, South Gloucestershire Council'I like the fact that the training is in manageable size chunks and can be fitted in easily in my busy life.'
Cllr Janet Biggin, South Gloucestershire Council
